Radio Astronomy at 70: from Karl Jansky to Microjansky, EAS Publ. series.

He graduated in 1927 with a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin, where his father Cyril was a professor of electrical engineering. Karl Jansky built an antenna that could be rotated on the wheels of a Model T so that he could track down sources of radio static, inventing radio astronomy in the process. Much of the outdoor footage for the 1997 film Contact was shot on-site at the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico.
